The Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003)
With the introduction of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCAA), New Zealand registration boards and authorities are now required by law to monitor and ensure the professional competence and fitness to practice of all registered practitioners, to protect public safety.
There are three key aspects of health practitioner competence covered by the HPCAA:
1. Demonstrating ongoing competence to practice.
2. Notifying designate authorities of concerns about practice
3. Maintaining mental and physical fitness to practice.
The main focus of the framework is ongoing competence.
