Match made in Timaru

Sue Topley contacted Tonix Health Recruitment several months ago to help her find a short-term placement here in the South Island as a midwife. Once introduced, Timaru Hospital was very quick to offer her a position within Women’s Health Services. Tonix NZ were able to get Sue’s registration sorted with the New Zealand Nursing Council as she had registration with New South Wales Nursing Council in Australia so under the TTMRA it took us only a couple of weeks. All seemed quite standard really….and everyone was happy…or so it seemed until Vicky Smith a senior midwife at Timaru realized she was going to lose a good team member so a plan was put into action and the rest is now Sue’s story:

"One year ago, Vicky Smith, an enthusiastic English midwife employed by Timaru Public Hospital went to the local cop shop on North Street and announced how there was a sad and lonely English girl in need of a good night out on the Town! Poor Dan the policeman was offered up by his police colleagues as an ideal candidate and basically had no choice in the matter. Sue, the sad lonely girl, stamped her feet and swore a lot, point blank refusing to go out on a blind date with a kiwi copper. A phone call was made to her well meaning mother and her advice, all the way from the United Kingdom, stated that she thought she was at least making a good career move by going along with the wishes of the senior management at the maternity ward.

After agreeing to go on the date with Dan the policeman, assuming he would call, (he was rather mortified by the whole situation), Dan didn't call all day and Sue was quite indignant about being let down!! At 1930, following the advice of HIS mother, the hard to get copper finally called. CCTV and the watch housekeeper at the Timaru police station who kindly sent us a squad car at the end of our evening out to offer us a lift home accompanied our first date!! The rest as they say is history. We are planning our wedding for next year. This photo was taken a couple of months back when we visited the UK to catch up with my family, Dan and I are on the London Eye."

…ah happy endings!
